The Studio of Gregory and Ema Epps – Robofold

A studio visit to Robofold, the lair of two young artists with origami under their nails. Since buying a pair of robots to make folded shapes with, this studio has been producing folded metal shapes that bring new opportunities to manufacture and architectural claddings. Truly here is the crossover of art, design and manufacture. Recently the pair, Gregory and Ema Epps have been contracted by Zaha Hadid for her contribution to the Venice Bienale, and also to Bentley the car manufacturer. Watching the sculptural forms magically emerge from sheet metal under the powerful yet delicate arms of the robots is inspiring.

Gregory and Ema have been working on folded structures for some years, and have evolved a way of working with other designers and architects so the folding process becomes one of collaboration.

About the blog

A view of the contribution that artists make to the cultural history of our lives. I am privileged to visit many studios in my work, and am always astonished at the variety and beguiling nature of them. This project began in 2001, and will continue as long as I have the help of my (mostly) willing subjects.
